First brought to Japan from China around 900 A.D., the art of Natural Indigo dyeing in Tokushima was made popular by Lord Hachisuka of Awa City in Tokushima, Japan. Lord Hachisuka discovered the perfect climate for Indigo cultivation in the Yoshino River Basin, leading to a revolutionary moment for Japanese Natural Indigo. Through the unique process of fermentation using Indigofera leaves to create the Sukumo paste, Tokushima Aizome dyeing has become synonymous with the prefecture. And because the dye is completely plant-based, the resulting garments not only showcase a beautiful color but also serve as a natural insect repellent. These garments have even been recognized as intangible cultural treasures of Japan, with skilled Shokunin (artisans) hand-dyeing each piece individually in roughly 5 dye cycles to achieve the perfect light hues.
