Extra Heavy Flannel Shirt-Navy (502552)

This heavyweight, yarn-dyed check shirt from UES tips the scales at over 15 ounces. Made from 100% cotton, the fabric is uniquely substantial—offering the volume and depth of wool, yet with the comfort of natural cotton. The fabric is woven with extremely thick yarns on traditional shuttle looms, of which only a few remain in Japan capable of handling this kind of thread. As a result, annual production is limited, making this fabric exceptionally rare.

The shirt features piped detailing along the hem and is cut with a slightly shorter length, designed to be worn untucked. You’ll also find a selvedge edge exposed on the left front panel—an intentional nod to the fabric’s traditional construction. Even in Japan, renowned for its selvedge textiles, shuttle looms capable of weaving this thickness are extremely rare.

The large-scale check pattern gives the shirt a jacket-like presence. During production, several skilled craftsmen carefully align each panel to match the checks—a meticulous process that uses more fabric but results in a cleaner, more polished final product.

Even the buttons reflect UES’s commitment to craftsmanship. Made from genuine buffalo horn, each one is slightly different in color and texture—ranging from deep blacks and dark hues to lighter browns. Though not as strong as plastic, horn buttons offer a richness and natural character that synthetic materials can’t replicate. Some may have slight imperfections in shape, which are embraced as part of the material's uniqueness. A spare button is sewn onto the care label—be sure to remove and store it.
