This new offering from SDA is what we believe to be one of the most unique denim fabrics we've had the pleasure to handle: the 双藍 (Sou-Ai) denim. This denim features a warp woven from a blend of Tokushima Natural Indigo and Pure Indigo-dyed yarns, paired with an undyed ecru weft. The name itself carries meaning—双 (Sou), meaning "pair" in Japanese, highlights the dual indigo yarns in the warp, while 藍 (Ai), meaning "indigo," pays tribute to the deep-rooted tradition of indigo dyeing.
By combining different indigo-dyed yarns in the warp, this denim achieves a one-of-a-kind hue and a remarkably dynamic texture. The variation in yarns enhances the fabric's surface character, producing a bold visual identity. At first glance, you'll notice the distinctive "rain streak" effect typical of Tokushima Natural Indigo denim. However, thanks to the inclusion of Pure Indigo, this denim fades more like a traditional Pure Indigo pair—developing high-contrast, focused wear patterns rather than the more uniform fading associated with Natural Indigo.
The result is a denim that honors heritage while pushing the boundaries of texture, tone, and fade potential.
